In the year 1518, more than 400 people danced on the streets in Strasbourg. This went on for a few weeks. This “dancing sickness” is still a mystery today.
This play asks why people act this way and what motivates us as a group. It’s about whether dance and other shared activities are things human beings need. Are there some desires that only a group can satisfy? UNRUHE invites the audience to a special experience. It’s a concert, play and celebration at the same time.
Nolwenn Peterschmitt (* 1992) is an actor, dancer and director. The theatre group Crisis from Marseille has existed since 2017. It brings different artists to work together again and again.
UNRUHE starts out from the theme of the „St. Vitus Dance“, a dance epidemic which infected Strasbourg inhabitants in 1518 and kept more than 400 people dancing in the streets for several weeks. By exploring this strange phenomenon, which continous to be an enigma to this day, and the socio-political context in which it occured, UNRUHE questions wether individual and collective impulses, including the act of dancing, are vital needs. Are there experiences that we as a society perhaps rarely look for anymore, yet can only be offered by a collective act? UNRUHE invites the audience to a ritual happening somewhere between a concert, a play and a celebration. It‘s an invitation to explore a mystery that only arises when people come together.
Nolwenn Peterschmitt, *1992, studied acting at the Academy of Limoges. After finishing her degree, she also trained in contemporary dance, butô, krumping and clowning.
