32 years ago, a photo made two young people very well known. Boško from Serbia and Admira from Bosnia hugging each other, but dead. It was in Sarajevo, in the Yugoslavian War.
Lots of people called them the “Romeo and Juliet of Sarajevo”. But their families didn’t like this name. Because they had no problem with their love. But still, later a film came out with the same title.
This play asks: what does the photo really show? What is behind images from war? The director Živa Bizovičar and her team tell the story of Boško and Admira, but also the story of Sarajevo and war photography. They have created an intelligent, respectful and poetic show.
Živa Bizovičar, (*1998) studied directing in Ljubljana (Slovenia). She has won many awards for her work.
Thirty-two years ago, a photo of two people embracing in death made its way through the international press as the ROMEO AND JULIET OF SARAJEVO: a document of the Yugoslavian war, described by journalists as the violent end of two lovers, who were given the names of the title characters from William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. Because then everyone would know what it meant. And even though the families of Admira Ismić and Boško Brkić – she was Bosnian, he was Serbian – were against the Shakespeare comparison, because they had never been opposed to their love, a year later a documentary film appeared with the same title.
What’s the difference between documentary reporting and the performative framing of events, between war photos and their interpretation, between a moment and the story behind it? Together with her team and the ensemble at the Slovenian Mladinsko Theatre in Ljubljana, director Živa Bizovičar has explored the stories behind this photo, the history of war photography, the occupation of Sarajevo and the stories of Boško and Admira. The result is an intelligent, informative, respectful and often poetic piece of theatre.
Živa Bizovičar, *1998, studied directing at the Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT) in Ljubljana, Slovenia and has received many awards for her productions. BOŠKO & ADMIRA is her fifth professional production as a director after completing her studies.
