more about the artist
From an anatomical perspective, the human voice is a delicate organ. And a powerful one. Hidden in the moist interior of the throat, the vocal cords are the source of sounds, song and screams. Inside, they work quite uniformly: together, apart, together, apart. But outside in the world, they can make big waves. From our first cry as a new-born infant, with which we greet life as a human being, to the screaming of fan girls. From raised voices to bad words. From lies to confessions. From animal sounds to cries of pain. And on the border between inside and out, there might be a kiss. Liisa Saaremäel’s SCREAM BOX moves playfully towards something quite existential. In collaboration with her “brother in crime”, musician Florian Wahl, she creates an associative stage trip, in which nothing is predictable and yet everything seems obvious. We see, hear and feel the human system of coordinates – hard and soft, delicate and powerful.
Liisa Saaremäel, b. 1992, studied Acting and was a member of the Estonian Drama Theatre ensemble in Tallinn from 2016 – 2020. In 2024, she was awarded the Ants Lauter Prize for outstanding achievement in the performing arts. SCREAM BOX is her fifth production.
